The Beauty of Guest Blogging

To Gain Authority in your Subject Area

When you guest blog in an authority blog, you are almost considered an expert if your content is of good quality. If you follow-up with more useful posts then you are starting to climb the authority ladder and hopefully gain new followers.

Increase Traffic to your Site

When you guest blog in an authority site that is already established with a reader base, you can tap into their traffic. If your post is engaging naturally the viewers might want to check out what other content you have produced and this increases traffic to your site.

New Email Subscribers and/or Customers

If you are in an authority site that gets plenty of traffic; your content has better visibility. If your guest post catches people’s attention and curiosity you can get new email subscribers and even customers. This of course depends on what you have to offer and how you go about it.

Build Backlinks Naturally

Getting backlinks from authority sites that are relevant to your niche is a big enough reason on its own to guest post, but when you combine that with the other benefits in this list – it is just the icing on the cake.

Increase Brand Awareness

Your blog on its own needs plenty of time or money to build brand awareness. But when you jump on somebody else’s blog that already has visibility and traffic; you are merely spreading the brand name faster.

Get Free Marketing and Exposure for your Content

Authority sites have good daily traffic; they also have big social following. When you guest post you are getting free marketing. The blog owner has built an authority site that attracts guest bloggers and they know how to market the content on their site – so do take advantage of their super content marketing knowledge.

Build Relationship with Established Bloggers

When you guest blog regularly, you start to build a relationship with an authority blogger. This relationship can open many doors for you. I got 2 guest posting opportunities on sites that do not accept guest posts traditionally due to the relationships I created.

Guest Blogging Myths

Your Site Authority is Important

You can have a brand new blog and can still land a guest posting opportunity. All you need is a good quality writing sample. In fact, Jon Morrow says you don’t even need a blog. He advises people to guest blog and start a mailing list before starting their own blog so they have a small reader base when starting their blog.

You need to have Established Connections

Established connections help but they are not necessary. If you are not confident in approaching an authority site – try creating a pillar post. Something that stands tall, something that’s not been done before in your niche. Research and create something jaw dropping awesome, then showcase that as your sample to open guest blogging doors. Here is my pillar post that opened guest posting doors and connections to me – 50 Blogging Tips Infographic.

Your Site needs Lot of Traffic

Your site traffic doesn’t matter at all. In fact, you don’t even need a site or blog!

You Must have Guest Blogged Before

You simply need a writing sample and that could be in your own blog. You can create a writing sample in medium for example if you don’t have your own blog; although I think that helps – you certainly don’t need any guest blogging experience.

How to Find Guest Posting Opportunities

Social Media

Search social media platforms like Twitter for: “guest post” keyword to see recent guest posts in your niche. You can then check out the site to see if it will be a good match for your post.

Google

Search Google for guest posting opportunities in your niche. You can use one or more of the following search terms (from KissMetrics) to find some sites that accept guest posts.

  • keyword “guest post”
  • keyword “guest post by”
  • keyword “accepting guest posts”
  • keyword “guest post guidelines”
  • keyword “submit a guest post”
  • keyword “guest author”

Once you find sites that accept guest posts, check the site metrics to see if it is a good fit for you.

Competitor Backlinks

Competing sites in your niche will be utilising guest posting opportunities to build backlinks, traffic and brand recognition. By taking a sneak peek at your competitor’s links you can find guest posting opportunities. You can use a tool like Open Site Explorer by Moz to do this.

Golden Rules of Guest Blogging

  • Socially Share your Guest Post. Share your post on Twitter and Facebook for example.
  • Reply to All Comments on your Guest Post. Engage with the viewers in the authority blog and make the job of the blog owner easier.
  • Do not Include Affiliate Links on a Guest Post. When someone gives you a free meal, you thank them and move on – don’t try to sell them something.

It goes without saying that you need to provide a quality guest post otherwise your post will be a one-off.

Tip: Format your post in WordPress and provide the html so the site owner can simply drag and drop the content.
