How Social Media ROI is Making the World a Better Place

Full disclosure here. I wanted to write something about Social Media ROI, but didn’t know what, exactly. So, I plugged “social media ROI” in to this content idea generator and that is the title that came out. So, I challenged myself to make it work. Here goes!
Isn’t that a tall order, asking social media to make the world a better place? I don’t think so. Social Media ROI keeps businesses committed to social media. Because they are committed to social media, we all benefit.
Allowing Charities and Non-Profits to Spread the Word
The fact that there IS an ROI on social media means that organizations and private citizens whose mission it is to help others, can spend less money on traditional advertising and fundraising and reach a huge audience anyway. One of my favorite examples is Single Dad, Laughing, a blogger who quickly raised $10,000 to help the family whose dog bit him (yes, you read that right – and the story is worth reading).
Better, Faster, Less-Annoying Customer Service
The knowledge that social media does provide a good return on investment leads businesses to up their social presence – supplying better, faster, more “real” customer service through Twitter, Facebook and other platforms. If they thought it was a waste of money, they wouldn’t be doing it – and I wouldn’t be able to Tweet my annoyance at a hosting outage and get an immediate response! I also wouldn’t be as likely to tell the world about an awesome product or service I use – thereby helping out those in the market for such a product. Win-Win!
It’s a Small World – and I Like It
Because social media platforms have found methods of generating ROI, I’ve reconnected with friends and family I might otherwise have lost forever – and it’s free! I’ve also met people in my industry who are smart, helpful, funny and kind. I’m not the type to seek out networking events, so I would never have met and learned from them otherwise. Social media has made MY world a better place. If there were no ROI and no hope for ROI for these networks, these platforms would not exist.
Keeping People Honest – Or Meting Out Justice
Business owners who choose to use social media because of the ROI, not only appear to be more transparent, they ARE more transparent – whether they wish to be all the time, or not. For instance, the Skillens Jewelry Facebook scam. OK, you could argue that it only happened BECAUSE of social media, but stay with me. Had they run this contest in-store, they could have “awarded” the prize to one of the owners of the store and no one would ever have known. However, because the winner accidentally replied as the page instead of herself, she gave it all away! Facebook page shut down. Much online mocking. JUSTICE!
Your turn! How have you seen social media ROI make the world a better place? Don’t think it has? Tell us why!
