Sets Realistic Sales Targets
A marketing plan helps you set realistic sales goals. After you have done a thorough analysis of the scope of your market and your competitors, you are in a position to do more accurate sales forecasting based on your intended promotions. You need to be able to visualize your sales goal in an easy-to-track spreadsheet. Apple provides daily, weekly, and monthly sales reports for you to track your progress. These reports can be easily downloaded into an Excel spreadsheet for viewing.
There are other companies out there that provide tracking services if you want to get very detailed metrics on sales progress for multiple apps. One of the companies is Tap Metrics (www.tapmetrics.com). It provides analytics and sales trend graphs and information. It charges a monthly fee for its services, but it also offers a free version of its tool (TapMini), which can be downloaded from the home page. TapMini automatically downloads and organizes your sales reports from iTunes Connect, shows you maps of where sales are occurring, updates you on user comments, and blog posts or twitter comments about your app. You don't need a TapMetrics account to use it, just your iTunes Connect login and Mac OS X10.5 or 10.6. You can use the free version to track up to three apps at no charge. A view of the Tap Metrics home page is shown in Figure 18.1.
